Unfinished History
"Unfinished History" is documentary project that explores the preserved history of Charlotte, North Carolina. The project consists of unique postcard-sized diptychs: one photograph displaying a building or location in Charlotte, North Carolina in the late 19th or early 20th century and one capturing the location as it appears today.
The photographic prints are a combination of the cyanotype process with modern inkjet printing. Pairing a hundred year old process with a new printing technology allowed me to mirror the subject matter of this series—a contrast of old and new. I worked with the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room who helped me with my research and provided access to their historical photo archives for this project.
This project was funded by a grant from the Arts and Science Council in Charlotte. And the work was completed at a winter residency I was awarded at Penland School of Craft. Over one hundred images were hand coated and printed during my time there.
